Clough Williams-Ellis built Portmeirion from 1925 to 1975 on a peninsula off the coast of Snowdonia to show how 'the development of a naturally beautiful site need not lead to its defilement'. Truly a spectacular sight, set into the dramatic North Welsh scenery, this is one of the area's most popular attractions. Suitable for all ages, although there is a gradient down to the lower gardens.
The Ffestiniog Railway is the oldest Independent Railway Company in the World. On their trains you can travel by steam through the spectacular scenery of the Snowdonia National Park, between Porthmadog and Blaenau Ffestiniog. The Company also operates trains on its sister railway, the Welsh Highland Railway, between Caernarfon and Rhyd Ddu. A fun family trip back to the age of steam!
Take an electric train journey deep under the Welsh mountains and explore caverns, tunnels and the mine's unique Victoria past. Two tour options, a victorian village and the 'Miners Arms' make this attraction well worth a visit. Voted the top North Wales attraction!
Majestic Snowdon dominates the glorious, ancient landscape of North Wales. At 3,560ft (1085m) it is a true mountain and a place of legend - said to be the burial place of the giant ogre Rhita, vanquished by King Arthur. Some believe that Arthur’s knights still sleep beneath. Since 1896, the Snowdon Mountain Railway has been making it easy to claim this mountain peak as one of your lifetime achievements. In a tremendously ambitious feat of engineering, and uniquely in Britain, a rack and pinion railway was built which rises to within 66ft of the summit of the highest mountain in England and Wales.
The Talyllyn Railway is a historic narrow-gauge steam railway, set in the beautiful Mid-Wales countryside. Running from Tywyn to Abergynolwyn and Nant Gwernol, the line passes the delightful Dolgoch Falls and there are excellent forest walks at Nant Gwernol. A great family day out. Shop and cafe available for your enjoyment.
Wales’ premier activity and adventure centre: Enjoy the many activities on offer at the Glasfryn centre located in the heart of the Llyn Peninsula in North Wales. Whether you decide to take the challenge of the go-kart circuit or try your hand at archery or ten pin bowling, Glasfryn offers the ideal family day out for everyone aged from three years up…just don’t forget your camera!
The Anglesey Sea Zoo is Wales' largest marine aquarium, nestling on the shores of the Menai Strait. With over 50 species, the Sea Zoo has recreated the habitats of the fauna and flora found around Anglesey and the North Wales coastline. From the intricacy and complexity of the invertebrates in the Bone Free Zone, your tour takes you through a Shipwreck, a walk over the Shark Pool and then on to the wonders of the Open Ocean. An exciting yet educational visit.
